The Brand
Our brand is a design house rooted in the spirit of American Classic Style expressed through the lived experience and beauty of black culture. Through our brand we strive to celebrate, educate and tell meaningful stories through our designs. We pay tribute to cultural ICONs, our cultural INSTITUTIONS, and most importantly the pride we as a culture have always had in how we dress and style ourselves. We are the genesis of American Classic Style.
The Inkwell
The Inkwell Sweater is inspired by the historic Inkwell Beach in Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard—a shoreline that became much more than a summer destination. For generations, it has been a gathering place for Black families, artists, writers, professionals, and cultural leaders who came to the Vineyard seeking community, rest, and the freedom to simply be.
Black presence on Martha’s Vineyard reaches back generations, but Oak Bluffs emerged as an especially important center of African American summer life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Shearer Cottage, opened in 1912 by Charles and Henrietta Shearer, became the island’s first Black-owned guest house and helped anchor a growing Black community alongside the beach that became known as the Inkwell
